Hii guys this is TECHWIKI again with a new topic in MASTERS IN COMPUTER. This topic is for everyone those who are interested in computer science and computers.

In this topic we will discuss what is MBR and GPT. And I want to make you all aware that this is the very important part in the computer science field. Because in many cases I have seen that people or students don’t even know about the partitioin.

And however this is the partition style, so if we will not know about the PARTITON then how we will come to the part of its style. As, these things are very much important in putting the any OS in any system.

So, without any further delay let’s get started…………..

What are MBR and GPT??

In simple language if told then these are the partition style used in the computer systems.

1. MBR- Its full form is MASTER BOOT RECORD. This is the partition style that supports BIOS i.e. LEGACY mode. It was used in the earlier days that when computer was new or we can say that it is used till now, in many systems. It is a very old firmware design, working is very slow and not applicable for gaming and especially gamers. Its boot time is very slow and it can hold only upto 2 Terabytes hard disk.

So, my recommendation will be to avoid all those systems with this old firmware.

2. GPT- Its full form is GUID PARTITION STYLE. This is the partition style that supports UEFI mode. It is used in todays systems and if your system doesn’t have this firmware design then you are in a great loss. It is the new firmware design, working is very fast and also a good recommendation from me to gaming and especially the gamers. Its boot time is very less than the MBR one and it can have 128 primary partition, which is the great feature of the this firmware. It can hold the storage of 10 Zettabytes, now you all are good in imaginations and can imagine how powerful is this.

Now, I hope that you all have understood what are these and how powerful one of them are.

Which one is Best??

I will recommend you all to use the systems with GPT firmware, because of its following PROS:---

· It is very fast specially the booting time.

· It is used for gaming or we can say in gaming systems.

· Its storage is very big i.e. 10 Zettabytes.

· It can have the 128 primary partition.

· This partition mode supports UEFI mode that is very easy to use and has very secure option that is “SECURE BOOT” option that remains disabled until and unless you give its password. So, this mode is very secured.

· In this partition style the partition information is stored two times. That at the beginning and at the end. If one of them is deleted no problem it will be reconfigured by the second one.

· This is style has the CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check)function. With this function your older files or images will be not infected if you don’t open them or use them. In simple means this function saves your older or unused files or images, etc.

· And due to its UEFI supporting facility there are many more functions but that are too complicated to explain you here, but I have given the most important and especial features of this partition style.

Now you all must be thinking that why I have suggested you all to use this style because of the following CONS of MBR:---

· It is very slow specially the booting time.

· It is not used for gaming or we can say in gaming systems.

· Its storage is not very big i.e. only 2 Terabytes.

· It can have only the 1 primary partition.

· This partition mode supports only BIOS i.e. LEGACY mode that is very complicated to use and does not has very secure option that is “SECURE BOOT” option and due to this drawback it is not secure. So, this mode is not secure.

· In this partition style the partition information is stored only one time. That is at the beginning and not at the end. If it is deleted then you will loose your partition.

· This is style don’t have the CRC(Cyclic Redundancy Check)function. With this function your older files or images will be not infected if you don’t open them or use them. In simple means this function saves your older or unused files or images, etc. But this style does not support this great function.

· And due to its LEGACY supporting facility there are many more drawbacks but that are too complicated to explain you here, but I have given the most important and important defects of this partition style.

So, these are the main defects or we can say the major drawbacks of this older firmware. But now also many of the systems have this old style so beware of that and don’t buy the systems with this old version firmware because of the cons mentioned above.

Best For Gaming

As mentioned earlier GPT is best for gaming and gamers. But we should also know why it is best.

I have told in the above pros and cons that GPT partition style is very fast and has more storage capacity than MBR. And if I am not wrong than GPT style is made specially for gaming purposes.

That’s why nowadays gaming pcs price are very high and everyone cannot afford it. But then also there are many student pcs that are build with the best firmware.

So, now you all can tell that which one is best for gaming, yes that is GPT style partition.

Best in Performance

Ofcourse it is GPT one as mentioned earlier. But we should also understand why it is the best in performance.

I have told in the above pros and cons that GPT partition style is very fast and has more storage capacity than MBR. Its system booting time is very less and this has the great impact on your system.

This is the reason why nowadays student pcs price are also increasing fast. But then also there are many student pcs that are build with the best firmware, within an affordable price.

So, now you all can tell that which one is best in performance, yes that is GPT.

How To Check MBR or GPT?

So, guys we have talked about what are these types and which one is best for gaming and also which one is best in performance.

But we should also know how we can check it is MBR or GPT. There are two ways to check it first is through cmd and second one is through diskmanagement.

Checking Through cmd:---

· Open CMD as an administrator.

· Type “diskpart”, and hit enter.

· Then type “list disk”, and hit enter.

· After that it will show you the list of your disks, in that under “*” column you will see written either GPT or MBR. If written GPT then your partition style is in GPT and if written MBR then your partition style is MBR.

Checking Through diskmanagement:----

· Right click on “THIS PC”.

· Then select “manage”.

· After that go to “disk management” present in the left side in the opened menu.

· After that it will show you all the present partitions, select “drive 0” and right click on it and go to properties.

· After opening of properties on the top you will see “volume” click it and you will see there mentioned either GPT or MBR.

Note:---Here you can choose any of the drive than drive 0, but I have choosen drive 0 because it is the main drive in which all storage is kept.

That’s why if the main partition has the GPT style then all other will have the same. And if MBR style then all other will also have the same.

So friends these were two different steps to check whether it is GPT or MBR style.
